Ancient Egypt Under the Roman Empire
Ancient Egypt Under the Roman Empire, 30 B.C.-640 A.D. With the establishment of Roman rule by Emperor Augustus in 30 B.C., more than six centuries of Roman and Byzantine control began. Ancient Egypt again became the province of an empire, as it had been under the Persians and briefly under Alexander. Ancient Egypt under Rome and Byzantium brought about many changes for the entire region. As the principal source of the grain supply for Rome, it came under the direct control of the emperor in his capacity as supreme military chief, and a strong force was garrisoned there. Gradually, Latin replaced Greek as the language of higher administration. In 212, Rome gave the Egyptians citizenship in their empire. The Roman province of Egypt (Aegyptus) was established in 30 BC after Octavian (the future emperor Augustus) defeated his rival Mark Antony, deposed his lover Queen Cleopatra VII and annexed the Ptolemaic kingdom of Egypt to the Roman Empire. The province encompassed most of modern-day Egypt except for the Sinai Peninsula (which would later be conquered by Trajan). Aegyptus was bordered by the provinces of Creta et Cyrenaica to the West and Judaea (later Arabia Petraea) to the East. Egypt would come to serve as a major producer of grain for the empire.[...] Read More...
The Ptolemaic Period in Ancient Egypt
The Ptolemaic Period in Ancient Egypt, 323-30 B.C. The Persian occupation of ancient Egypt ended when Alexander the Great defeated the Persians at the Battle of Issus (near present-day Iskenderun in Turkey) in November 333 B.C. Ptolemaic Egypt began when Ptolemy I Soter invaded Egypt and declared himself Pharaoh of Egypt in 305 BC and ended with the death of queen Cleopatra VII of Egypt and the Roman conquest in 30 BC. The Ptolemaic Kingdom was a powerful Hellenistic state, extending from southern Syria in the east, to Cyrene to the west, and south to the frontier with Nubia. Alexandria became the capital city and a center of Greek culture and trade. To gain recognition by the native Egyptian populace, they named themselves as the successors to the Pharaohs. The later Ptolemies took on Egyptian traditions, had themselves portrayed on public monuments in Egyptian style and dress, and participated in Egyptian religious life.[...] Read More...
The Late Period in Ancient Period
The Late Period in Ancient Period During these years, Egyptian culture was under pressure from major civilizations of the eastern Mediterranean and the Near East. The socioeconomic system, however, had a vigour, efficiency, and flexibility that ensured the success of the nation during these years of triumph and disaster. The name ‘Late Period’ is usually given to the time from the end of the Third Intermediate Period to the beginning of Greek rule. Earlier historians saw it as period of decline, but it was in fact very mixed. During the Late Period, Egypt alternated between native rule and domination by Persia. Psammetichus I (Twenty-sixth Dynasty) used Greek mercenaries to seize power in the vacuum left by the withdrawal of both Assyria and the Kushite kings from Egypt. The Persians installed a new administrative system; all business was conducted in Aramaic, the language of the Persian empire. Several Persian kings carried out building projects in Egypt but followed the Egyptian traditions of art and architecture.[...] Read More...
The New Kingdom in Ancient Egypt
The New Kingdom in Ancient Egypt Around the year 1600 B.C., a semi-autonomous, New Kingdom Theban dynasty under the suzerainty of the Hyksos became determined to drive the Shepherd Kings out of the country and extend its own power. The later part of this period, under the Nineteenth and Twentieth Dynasties (1292-1069 BC) is also known as the Ramesside period, after the eleven pharaohs that took the name of Ramesses. Radiocarbon dating suggests that the New Kingdom may have started a few years earlier than the conventional date of 1550 BC. The radiocarbon date range for its beginning is 1570-1544 BC, the mean point of which is 1557 BC.[...] Read More...
Kingdom vs Intermediate Periods
Kingdom vs Intermediate Periods Historians have given the name Kingdom to those periods in ancient Egyptian history when: The central government was strong. The country was unified. And there was an orderly succession of pharaohs. Intermediate Periods are the times when: Central authority broke down. Competing centres of power emerged. The country was plunged into civil war or was occupied by foreigners. The ancient Egyptian Old Kingdom and the Middle Kingdom together represent an important single phase in Egyptian political and cultural development. The Third Dynasty reached a level of competence that marked a plateau of achievement for ancient Egypt.[...] Read More...

Waleed Barakat Egypt Travel Tips: Money: Small notes (1, 5, 10) are like gold in Egypt! You pretty much tip everyone who looks at you so you will need a good supply of small notes handy. I believe there are coins as well, but I never saw them! Wages are criminally low so Egyptians rely on tips from foreigners and locals alike, so stock up on the small notes. Also, it’s very, very difficult to get change so try and get as much as you can before arriving (even banks are reluctant to share). One of the happiest moments of my trip was finding an ATM in Aswan that gave out 10 pound notes! (opposite the Basma Hotel, next to the Nubia Museum).[...] Read More...
